Ecole Ephphatha pour les Sourds, Burundi
Ephphatha Deaf School (EDS) was founded by the Emmanuel Association of Churches on 2nd November 1981. It is currently operates two schools, with one being for the deaf, in Burundi. The deaf school is located within the Kigobe Mission compound in Bujumbura. The residential school houses boys and girls dorms, classrooms, dining hall, sewing room and woodworking shop, and has approximately 125 full time students. In 2012, EDS built a new building for dormitories which have 22 spaces for boys and 22 spaces for girls, with 16 children (12 boys and 4 girls) attending school daily from their homes. The children also have a blacktop area for outdoor games and grass fields for soccer and other activities. In addition to traditional academic classes for grades 1 – 6, students have daily Bible class and participate in weekly chapel services. Once students complete grade 6 they are able to take two years of sewing or woodworking class. Students who attend the school are orphans, war refugees, and also come from poor areas of the country. Fees for the school can be a burden on the families of the deaf children and child sponsorship funds can provide uniforms, food, and school supplies for those attending the school. Allow the Children Ministries administers the child sponsor program for the school. The ministry has also provided funds for repairs, food and other needs of the school. Ministry teams have come to teach, share the gospel, and complete work projects on the campus of the school. |
